Joy In Birthing Foundation - Who We Are from Giuditta Tornetta on Vimeo.

Why We Serve

In the USA 3 women die each day from childbirth complications. The majority are low income women of color.

These are the women and families we serve. Our clientele is disproportionately impacted by a real crisis in the maternal heath of the United States. Inconsistent care likely contributes to racial disparities in maternal health outcomes often resulting in unnecessary interventions, discrimination, and higher rates of complications in vaginal deliveries. The rates for complication for cesarean births increases five-fold.

Our Mission

To provide birth and postpartum doula services to low income families, women in the foster care system, mothers in homeless shelters, pregnant teenagers, survivors of sexual trafficking and expecting women in the criminal justice system.

We are located in and serve throughout the greater Los Angeles, California area.

Who We Serve

Our clientele is disproportionately impacted by a real crisis in the maternal heath of the United States. Inconsistent care likely contributes to racial disparities in maternal health outcomes often resulting in unnecessary interventions, discrimination, and higher rates of complications in vaginal deliveries. The rates for complication for cesarean births increases five-fold.

When continuous labor support was provided by a doula, women experienced a:
  • 31% decrease in the use of Pitocin*
  • 28% decrease in the risk of C-section*
  • 12% increase in the likelihood of a spontaneous vaginal birth*
  • 9% decrease in the use of any medications for pain relief
  • 14% decrease in the risk of newborns being admitted to a special care nursery
  • 34% decrease in the risk of being dissatisfied with the birth experience*
  • *this outcome was best affected by a doula rather than another type of support

Our Goals

Picture
We have three primary goals:

  1. To accompany families through pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period by offering professional doula services* thus reducing the risk for medical interventions for both mother and child, while providing informational, emotional and physical support before, during and after the birth of their child.
  2. To facilitate doula training within the communities we serve and stimulate peer support. To provide our volunteer doulas advanced training and mentorship.
  3. To educate low income families and the communities at large about safe pregnancy, birth, and baby care practices through classes and printed material.
*Our doulas receive no payment for their services and spend a minimum of 20 hours per client.  With your help we'd like to change that, please help us sustain or professional volonteer doulas with an expenses reinbursment fund.

"Our clients tend to  be socially isolated and very low income women; being able to link them with volunteer doulas for support during the birth of their babies has been incredibly valuable. The doulas have demonstrated great compassion and sensitivity for our clients both before and after the births of their babies. "
